Liverpool’s Hope University is the first university in the country to announce staff job cuts in the reorganisation of Higher Education that is going to sweep the country. Over 100 jobs are to be cut, at least 60 will be academic positions.
MNAFC stands in solidarity with the staff who are facing threats to their livelihood and against the larger attack on education this is part of. Students and workers from every sector need to unite. The street chant “Your job’s next” is true.
Hope students are beginning a campaign to support their staff and protect their education. Get in touch if you would like to be part of it, make your voice heard or find out more information. The first meeting to organise a way forward is next Friday 11th February – but we will be visible on campus during the week too.

The MNAFC also stands in solidarity and support with the UCU (University & College Union) who are balloting members in Higher and Further Education this month for strike action over pension, pay and job security. We urge all students to talk to their teachers and lecturers and offer them support about striking and standing up for their rights.
Do you mean Friday 11th February? Seems a bit long to wait otherwise…
yep
– thanks for spotting that.
This is no surprise to me. I did my BA there between 2003-2006 and my MA from 2006-2008. During that time numerous staff members lost their jobs for totally ridiculous reasons. Union shop and bar staff were cut, canteen staff were cut, other departments suffered and in fact my partner lost her job when they pulled a really dirty trick on her making out she was on a 1 year contract. Her contract was actually permanent but because of how they pulled this off she only managed to get a few hundred pounds from them, most of which she was owed for work done; no redundancy. We had to get legal advice and argue the money they owed her from them. They got rid of the nursery that was for staff members kids and turned it into a conference centre despite the fact that they had just completed one multi-million building and had just approved the building of another one which I believe they now hold conferences in. Hope used to be a place that welcomed people; now the people running it just want money money money. I have heard rumours that top level staff are on 6 figure salaries pa, my partners wage was under £6000 pa; they disgust me.
